The artist Anton Morokov (*1991) from Nizhnij Novgorod (RU) has spent six weeks dealing with the city of Basel and its inhabitants and presents now the results of his art project «private flags» in a public exhibition.

The young Russian artist, inspired by Guy Débord's (1931-1994) philosophy of spatial experience, explores various quarters and areas of the city on several walks. He sets out on these walks together with a group of participants, each of whom lives for a different length of time in the city of Basel and who were sought in advance via an open call. In his joint explorations of the city, Morokov is primarily concerned with finding out what emotions and observations the various locations trigger in the participants.
Following the walks, the artist reflects on the expressed emotions and observations. In self-made flags with individual statements about the individual locations of the city of Basel as well as in graphic works, he visually implements his reflection. In a concluding walk, all participants of the walks carry the flags to the appropriate places in the city together with the artist.The artistic results of this project, as well as a video documentation of the final walk, will be presented in the exhibition.  

Anton Morokov is the first artist beeing invited to Basel by the Philosophicum im Ackermannshof in cooperation with the Bartels Foundation in the Markgräflerhof as part of an artist-residence from the 2nd of January to the 15th of February 2019.

«Anton Morokov (*1991. Russia) is an artist from Nizhny Novgorod and a participant of the informal art group called Muddlehood. Since 2010, he develops his own artistic language, which contains a repeated use of a variety of combinations of visual symbols. The process of developing and using this artistic language is an important part of the artist’s strategy. Graphic series of Morokov reminds of personal diaries, separate sheets of which are available for both viewers and collectors.
Although, street art works in the urban area are created more for random communication and free interpretations by a wider audience, the reaction is an important part of the artistic experiment and a way out of the laboratory isolation of the artistic process. Inheriting the traditions of conceptualism, the artist adds to them a deliberate aesthetic which is a kind of tradition in the Nizhny Novgorod art scene.
